Whole-project ranges from the same model the estimator uses: Tesla panels at $3.35 per watt ($2.35 after the instant rebate; standard panels start at $3.00 per watt and Tesla panels add $0.35), Powerwall 3 at $16,000 each, about $2,000 of project incidentals, a band up to 10% higher, then the 30% instant rebate and the $2,000 Wattsmart incentive on the first Powerwall. Four things move any number here: your utility, your main electrical panel, your roof and travel, and where the Powerwall goes. Municipal and co-op utilities (Provo, Lehi, Spanish Fork, Payson, SESD, St. George and others) have no battery incentive: add $2,000 to the after-incentive range.

Sizing: annual use = bill ÷ $0.115 per kWh × 12; Tesla panels (420 W) sized to cover it at 1,500 kWh per kW per year, 3 kW minimum, 25 kW (60 panels) maximum. When Google's solar data covers your address, your roof replaces those assumptions in your Tesla Home Plan: it sets the panel count and the production, and Google's bill-matched usage for your location replaces the flat rate. Most homes size smaller once the roof and real usage replace the flat rate. Each extra Powerwall 3 adds about $11,200 after the instant rebate. Powerwall 3 added to existing solar: $16,000 installed → $11,200 after the 30% instant rebate → $9,200 for Rocky Mountain Power customers (first Powerwall 3). Manufacturer warranties: 25-year Tesla solar panel warranty (product and performance, at least 87.2% of nameplate output in year 25 per the Tesla datasheet) and 10-year Tesla Powerwall 3 warranty, inverter included.
Three different $2,000 items, not the same money. How many Tesla Powerwalls does a Utah home need?
Each Powerwall 3 stores 13.5 kWh, delivers 11.5 kW continuously and is rated for 185 LRA motor starting. Essentials such as a well pump, furnace blower, refrigeration, lights and internet usually land at one Powerwall 3; most of the home, with the kitchen, hot water and one air conditioner, at two; whole-home backup with EV charging, a shop and all HVAC at three. Is the 30% a federal tax credit?
No. It is an instant rebate: under the Tesla pre-paid PPA the PPA provider owns the system, claims the tax benefits available to a system owner and passes the value to the homeowner on day one, so no tax liability is needed to capture it. The system is scheduled to transfer to the homeowner around year 6. Under the written Ask Solar Mike $0 Transfer Guarantee the buyout at that transfer is $0, and if the PPA provider charges more, Ask Solar Mike covers the difference (per the written guarantee; terms apply). What Utah battery rebate exists in 2026?
Rocky Mountain Power's Wattsmart Battery program pays a one-time $2,000 enrollment incentive for a single new battery of 10 kW or larger, such as a Tesla Powerwall 3, with a four-year commitment and a prorated repayment of the incentive if the customer leaves early; the utility may dispatch the battery under the program terms. It applies once per home, on the first Powerwall 3, and only to Rocky Mountain Power customers; batteries under 10 kW earn $1,000. Enrolled batteries also earn small annual participation credits (years 2 to 4: $15 per kW, capped at $100; years 5 and later: $50 per kW, capped at $250), the utility never discharges the battery below a 10% reserve, and a battery paired with solar charges from the solar; a time-of-use rate is required only for a stand-alone battery with no solar. Why do batteries matter under Rocky Mountain Power's export credit?
Rocky Mountain Power connects solar under net billing (Schedule 137): power you export earns a published credit rate below the retail rate you pay. A Powerwall stores your solar for the evening instead of exporting it, which is why the battery count, not the panel count, drives most of the design. Your bill savings depend on your utility's export credit and your usage, so this page quotes hardware, not savings.
Tesla direct, or a Utah installer that appears in Tesla's public Certified Installer locator?
Tesla sells solar and Powerwall directly through tesla.com and also publishes a public locator of independent installers (tesla.com/support/certified-installers). What if my city has paused solar interconnection?
Some Utah cities pause or refuse net metering.
