Tesla offers two very different ways to power your Utah home with the sun, and choosing between them comes down to what you care about most. One is built to maximize savings. The other is built to be the best roof on the market. Here is how to decide.
Tesla Solar Panels mount on your existing roof and are the right choice if your primary goal is lowering your electric bill and reaching a payback point. They cost less than a full Solar Roof, install faster, and work especially well for homeowners in Rocky Mountain Power cities like Sandy, Riverton, and West Valley City, where pairing panels with a Powerwall lets you use more of your own power under net billing. If you want the fastest route to bill savings, panels are usually the answer.
The Tesla Solar Roof replaces your entire roof with integrated solar tiles, so it is a roof and a power system in one. Homeowners choose it for protection and aesthetics rather than a payback number. It carries the highest ratings available: Class A fire, Class F wind up to 166 mph, and Class 4 hail, all backed by a 25-year warranty. It looks like a premium roof rather than panels bolted on top. For a homeowner in Park City, Draper, or St. George building or replacing a roof anyway, and who wants the best roof made, the Solar Roof is compelling.
Ask yourself one question: is your main goal to save money, or to have the best possible roof? If it is savings, go with panels, ideally with a Powerwall. If you need a new roof anyway, or you want top-tier protection and a seamless look and see energy as part of that package, the Solar Roof fits. There is no wrong answer, only the one that matches your priorities.
The current offer works for either choice. Mike's 30 percent discount and his $2,000 rebate apply to both Solar Panels and the Solar Roof. If Rocky Mountain Power is your utility, the separate $2,000 RMP rebate applies as well. The federal tax credit and Tesla's old instant rebate have both ended, so this stack is what is available now.
Utilities are projecting close to 10 percent annual rate increases in Utah, up from a historical 4 percent, driven by AI data-center demand and grid modernization. Whichever product you choose, locking in your own cost of production is the hedge against that climb. Panels do it at a lower price point, the Solar Roof does it while also replacing and upgrading your roof.
Is the Solar Roof worth the extra cost? It depends on your goals. If you need a new roof and want the best protection available, yes. If pure savings is the goal, panels usually make more financial sense.
Do both qualify for the rebates? Yes. The 30 percent and Mike's $2,000 apply to both, plus the $2,000 RMP rebate for Rocky Mountain Power customers.
Which saves more money? Panels, typically, because they cost less up front while still offsetting your bill.
