Most of Utah is on Rocky Mountain Power, an investor-owned utility on net billing. Provo is different. Provo City Power is a municipally owned utility with its own net metering program: the kilowatt-hours you produce offset the kilowatt-hours you use before you are billed on the net. You stay connected to the city grid and pay a base rate for that connection, but offsetting your usage at the meter is generally better for solar owners than a reduced export credit.
Provo also offers SharedSolar, a community solar option for homeowners whose roof is shaded or poorly oriented. For a good south or west facing roof, rooftop solar typically delivers more long-term value. Net metering terms, fees, and credit rollover rules are set by the city and can change, so confirm the current Provo rules with Mike before sizing your system.
The federal residential solar tax credit ended on January 1, 2026 for cash and loan buyers. You no longer claim 30 percent back on your taxes. Mike replaces it with an instant 30 percent rebate applied at signing, already in your quote, with nothing to file. The rebate ends July 4, 2026, then full price.
With net metering, a correctly sized system can offset a large share of your usage. A Tesla Powerwall 3 still adds outage backup and lets you use more of your own power directly, which matters in older Provo neighborhoods near campus where panel upgrades sometimes come into play. For most Provo homes, Tesla solar panels are the cost-effective choice. If your roof is aging, the Tesla Solar Roof is the premium option, chosen for the look and protection over payback.
Run the savings calculator on this page for a starting estimate, then let Mike tailor it to Provo's rules and your usage.
You are likely a strong candidate if your monthly bill runs over $120, you have south or west roof exposure, your home is served by Provo City Power, and you own it.
Does Provo have net metering? Yes. Provo City Power is a municipal utility that runs its own net metering program. Confirm current terms with Mike, since the city can change them.
What is SharedSolar? It is Provo's community solar option, a good alternative for homes with shaded or poorly oriented roofs. For a strong roof, rooftop solar usually delivers more value.
Do I get a federal tax credit in 2026? Not for cash or loan purchases. That ended January 1, 2026. Mike's instant 30 percent rebate captures that value up front.
What happens after July 4, 2026? The instant 30 percent rebate ends and projects move to full price.
Provo's city net metering makes it a strong solar market. Run the calculator above, then call or text Mike at 385-312-0904 or get a free quote at asksolarmike.com/google.
