Most of the Salt Lake valley is served by Rocky Mountain Power, an investor-owned utility that uses net billing and credits exported power at a reduced rate. Murray is different. Murray City Power is a municipal utility and has run a net metering program for residential solar since 2006. Under net metering, the power you send to the grid offsets the power you pull back later, which is generally more favorable to solar owners than net billing.
Because municipal programs set their own terms and can change, confirm the current Murray City Power net metering rules and any fees with Mike before sizing your system. The Wattsmart battery incentive offered to Rocky Mountain Power customers does not apply in Murray, so the value here comes from the net metering itself.
The federal residential solar tax credit ended on January 1, 2026 for cash and loan buyers. You no longer claim 30 percent back on your taxes. Mike replaces it with an instant 30 percent rebate applied at signing, already in your quote, with nothing to file. The rebate ends July 4, 2026, then full price.
With net metering, a correctly sized system can offset a large share of your usage without needing as much from a battery purely for savings, though a Tesla Powerwall 3 still adds outage backup. Many Murray homes are established, so if your roof is nearing the end of its life, the Tesla Solar Roof is worth considering as a premium option that replaces the roof and generates power in one project, chosen for the look and protection over payback. For most homes, Tesla solar panels are the cost-effective choice.
Run the savings calculator on this page for a starting estimate, then let Mike tune it to Murray City Power's actual rules and your usage.
You are likely a strong candidate if your monthly bill runs over $130, you have south or west roof exposure, your home is served by Murray City Power, and you own it.
Does Murray have net metering? Yes. Murray City Power is a municipal utility that has offered net metering since 2006. Confirm current terms with Mike, since municipal programs can change.
Do I get a federal tax credit in 2026? Not for cash or loan purchases. That ended January 1, 2026. Mike's instant 30 percent rebate captures that value up front.
Do I need a battery in Murray? With net metering, a battery is more about outage backup than savings, though a Tesla Powerwall 3 still adds value.
What happens after July 4, 2026? The instant 30 percent rebate ends and projects move to full price.
Murray City Power's net metering makes Murray a strong solar market. Run the calculator above, then call or text Mike at 385-312-0904 or get a free quote at asksolarmike.com/google.
